Should I take my antibiotics (doxycycline) on a full stomach or empty?
… And what are the advantages and disadvantages of each form? Volume doxycycline for acne, and it says on the bottle of pills to take on an empty stomach. However, break a sweat and feel like I'm going to throw up (sometimes I do sick) if I do so. I read online (in several places, including a forum for acne) is supposed to take it before or during a meal, and I feel good when I do, but specifically says on the bottle of pills to take on an empty stomach. So why does it take on an empty stomach in the bottle, but everywhere, said to have a full stomach? Am I not get the full benefit of the pill if I take a full stomach? Volume with at least 8 ounces of water immediately, and I often drink additional 8 oz in 10-15 min.
The absorption of doxycycline is not markedly affected by food, so you can take with meals. However, It is recommended that doxycycline not be taken concurrently, such as aluminum, magnesium or calcium based antacids such as Mylanta, Maalox, Tums, Rolaids or because, like food, these medications bind doxycycline in the intestine and prevent its absorption. Similarly, doxycycline should not be taken with minerals (such as calcium or iron) or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol). So you can take with a meal, but not all dairy products (milk, yogurt, cream, cheese).
